What Are Chemo Curls?

Your hair follicles, just like cancer cells, are fast growing.

This is why when chemotherapy attacks fast growing cells, it unfortunately includes your hair follicles.

And this is the reason why many individuals (not all) end up loosing their hair during chemo treatment.

According to Northwestern Medicine: “Many people report having “chemo curls,” or different hair color and texture when it grows back after chemotherapy. This is because the chemotherapy medications can remain in your body and cause your hair follicles to behave differently.” (Read More)

Can Chemo Curls Last Forever?

Don’t worry too much since for most people their chemo curls tend to only last for a few months and is not permanent.

Must people revert back after a few months.

So you might as well enjoy those curls while you’ve got them 🙂

When Can You Start Styling Your Chemo Curls?

The best plain is to FIRST prioritize scalp and follicle heath and THEN styling.

This is due to the fact that if you start styling (coloring, heat, etc) too early you risk breakage and you are going back to square one.

I Would Recommend:

  • Wait until hair is about 1 inch long before applying heat or styling products.
  • Avoid coloring or chemical treatments until your medical team gives the okay—usually 6–12 months post-chemo.
  • Use clean, gentle hair products—think sulfate-free, fragrance-free, and non-toxic.

Your scalp may still be sensitive at the beginning so consider adding these things to your routine:

  1. Soft headwraps
  2. Wide-tooth comb
  3. Finger-detangling & gentle scalp massages

Easy Chemo Curl Hairstyles

Here are a few hairstyles that are easy to do and save you time and energy while still looking cute.

1. Air Dry

As someone with curls myself I can tell you that the easiest way it by letting your curls air dry.

You simply apply the products to your damp hair, comb through evenly, and go about your day while your hair dries.

2. Hair Dryer – Diffuser

But if you don’t have the time or the weather is too cold for that, then investing in a diffuser is a great option.

For example: INFINITIPRO BY CONAIR Hair Dryer with Diffuser.

3. Slicked Wet Look

To achieve this look you will need to apply gel and mouse on to your damp hair. Don’t forget the anti-frizz spray and you will be ready to rock this look!

Youtube is a great place to find step by step tutorials.

4. Headbands – Scarfs

This is another great way to style your curls – especially when your curls are short – and adds a pop of color to the outfit you choose.

All these easy options will help you settle into your new hairstyle and give a boost of confidence.

Because when we feel beautiful it shows.

Chemo Curl Haircuts

Pinterest is a great source to find inspiration.

The important thing to keep in mind is to NOT fight your curl. Find your curl type and go from there.

No matter in which stage of your hair regrowth you may find yourself here are a few haircut options:

  1. Soft Pixie Cut
  2. Curly Bob
  3. Layered Cuts – great way to avoid bulk.

Loving Your New Hair

Change isn’t easy and that also applies to our hair.

But also remind yourself that it is also a sign that your body is healing.

Your curls may not be permanent, so why not enjoy them while you have them 🙂

FAQ: Chemo Curl Hairstyles

How long do chemo curls last?

It varies—some women see curls soften or vanish after a year, others retain them indefinitely. Hair texture often continues to change in the years following treatment.

Can I straighten my chemo curls?

Yes, but proceed with caution. Wait until your hair is strong (typically 6–12 months post-chemo) and use a heat protectant. Avoid frequent straightening to reduce breakage.

Are there haircut styles that suit chemo curls best?

Absolutely. Go for pixie cuts, curly bobs, or layered looks—styles that embrace texture. Seek a stylist experienced in post-chemo hair and curls.
