Stim Toys And Their Benefits
What Is A Stim Toy
First we need to understand WHY you may want a stim or fidget toy. What is its purpose?
This way you will be able to choose the right one for you.
Manage anxiety and reduce stress and figting boredom allowing you to stay focused by getting that energy out.
Fidget toys are great way to release some of that extra energy you have in your body. You are able to stim in a way that is compact and comfortable to your sensory needs. It’s a way of soothing and helps the individual relax.
What Is Your Fidget Toy Sensory Profile?
1. “Mechanical” Type – Fidget Toy
Are you someone that enjoys a clicky sound like the one you get when you turn on an off a light switch? Or pressing a button like when you use the remote control for the TV or writing on your computer keyboard.
Then you may be interested in a more “mechanical” type of fidget toy.
Here are a few examples:
For those that LOVE pressing a button, these are some great options for you.
1. WTYCD Original Fidget Toy Game, Rubberized Classical Controller. This is a great choice because it’s small and easy to carry around, and had 8 different functions. You get buttons that make a click sound when pressed and ones that don’t. Giving the individual the choice according to their needs.
This is great for those occasions when you want to use your toy but not call attention to yourself or maybe bother the person next to you.
2. Fidgets Wacky Tracks Fidget Toys. These are another excellent option of a portable toy that also gives you that “clicky” sound you love. With these ones you can mix and match colors and sizes simply by attaching the different links together.
The material is a medium plastic, not too rigid but not too soft, making it the perfect medium to where you get a click sound and can enjoy hours of stimulation.
Great option to fight those moments of boredom or when you need something in your hand to fidget with.
3. Keyboard Fidget Keychain. These are a cute keyboard button keychain. The fact that it’s a keychain makes it a great option for those of us that tend to forget and misplace things. This way you know you will have it at hand, and another great feature is that it comes in a pack of six different colors to enjoy.
2. Movement Type – Fidget Toy
These are perfect for those that like to move their hands or find comfort in movement gestures and not so much a clicking movement.
A great example are:
1. Sensory Slug Toy. These are some of the classic stim toys that come to mind, you can find them anywhere. A great thing is that you get sound but also movement, which keeps you interested and focused. You have different sizes and colors to choose from. If you are a person that needs multiple colors you have that option and if you are someone that needs more muted colors, you also have that option.
2. Spiky Sensory Rings. These are perfect if you are looking for a discrete stim toy. They make no noise but still allow you to fidget and be entertained with the movement of your fingers.
3. Infinity Cube Sensory Fidget Toy. If you enjoy improving your hand dexterity while reducing your anxiety and increasing your focus, then this is a greta stim toy option for you. You can interlock and rotate the cubes in multiple directions which allows for your creativity to come afloat and stay entertained.
3. Squishy Type – Sensory Fidget Toy
These are ideal for all those that have a sensory need for something a but more “squishy” to keep them entertained.
The need to squeeze being a great stress reliever. As far as stim toys these would make some great options:
1. Duck Squishy Stress Ball. These are super cute and squishy fidget toys. It’s soft, easy to squish, and can also be stretched. A great way to reduce anxiety while also playing with something cute. Makes a great quiet sensory toy.
2. Squishy Sensory Stress Balls. These have the benefits you get from using a stress ball while also improving you focus and attention. They are easy to manipulate and get you that squeezing sensation. an ideal gift for yourself or someone you know.
3. Mochi Stress Reliever. If you are looking for a small and discrete squishy stim toy then these are great. They are cute and easy to carry around anywhere. they provide the perfect amount of stimulation while also allowing you to stay focused.
4. Pop It Style – Stim Toy
Bu now who hasn’t heard of a Pop It, basically the “Classic” ADHD fidget toy. They are great for keeping you entertained and focused. I use them all the time and you can find them in all sizes.
Here are a few variations that I found that you may like.
1. Stress Balls Pop It. A wonderful fusion of both a stress ball and a Pop It. Great choice if you enjoy that Pop stimulation while at the same time having a stress ball and squish sensation to decrease stress and anxiety. The fact that it’s a ball makes it easier to manipulate with one hand instead of having to leave the toy on a flat surface and the classic Pop It.
2. Classic Pop It Toy. These are the classic rainbow colored ones. I’ve used these with my autistic toddler and he loved it. We used it to keep him entertained and at the same time help him learn to name colors and count the pops in the PopIt.
3. Pop It! Pro. These are a step up, if you like the pop it but also having a stimulation game where you have to complete the light up sequence, then this is the one for you. It has 20 levels of difficulty to choose from. A great way to reduce anxiety and improve focus.
To summarize
These are all great options to include in your every day stress reducing routine. It really just depends on your sensory preference.
personally I ise a few different ones depending on where I am at the moment. If I want to be discrete with my stim toy or if I’m at home and want something with more noise.
Using a stim toy is nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s not a bad thing, it’s quite the opposite. It’s a great way to stay focused, reduce stress, increase focus, and over all have a little fun while doing so. 😀
